In this short episode, we introduce Stephanie Slater and preview a new recurring segment focused on honey shows and judging.

Stephanie joins the Beekeeping Today Podcast to share her background in beekeeping, with particular experience in participating in and judging honey shows. This area of beekeeping—often overlooked by many—plays an important role in evaluating honey quality, presentation, and craftsmanship.

In this introduction, Stephanie discusses her involvement in honey shows and offers a glimpse into what goes into judging entries, from visual appearance to handling and preparation. Her experience provides a unique perspective that connects everyday beekeeping practices with standards used in competition and evaluation.

This episode sets the stage for a new monthly series where Stephanie will explore honey shows in greater depth—helping listeners understand how to participate, what judges look for, and how to improve their hive products.

Whether you’ve entered a honey show before or are simply curious, this short opens the door to a deeper look at one of the more specialized and rewarding aspects of beekeeping.

Hey everybody, welcome to this special short.

00:00:24.279 --> 00:00:25.560
We have some fun

00:00:26.020 --> 00:00:27.380
Information to share with you.

00:00:27.380 --> 00:00:29.140
It's not just fun information.

00:00:29.140 --> 00:00:33.860
This is like a this is like a gift to our listeners, I think.

00:00:33.860 --> 00:00:37.300
It's a long-term listener gift.

00:00:37.380 --> 00:00:41.780
especially those beekeepers who are excited about honey.

00:00:41.780 --> 00:00:50.420
Yeah, we invited Stephanie on to talk to us about the new series she's going to be doing for us here on Beekeeping Today podcast

00:00:51.280 --> 00:00:53.680
Thank you, Jeff and Becky, for having me.

00:00:53.680 --> 00:01:00.320
I am so excited to have an opportunity to speak to your listeners once a month.

00:01:00.460 --> 00:01:11.740
about honey shows, judging, the art of exhibiting, and maybe some tips and tricks on how to avoid some of those sticky situations you can get into at honey shows.

00:01:12.100 --> 00:01:15.140
Sticky situations.

00:01:15.140 --> 00:01:18.660
You've seen my my my jar entries then.

00:01:18.660 --> 00:01:19.780
Oh no.

00:01:19.780 --> 00:01:21.460
I may or may not have Jeff

00:01:24.860 --> 00:01:26.700
Well this will be exciting.

00:01:26.700 --> 00:01:37.260
So we've had you on the show as a guest a couple of times talking about well at different shows and you were there judging or helping with the right thing.

00:01:36.760 --> 00:01:39.799
with a sh uh uh the honey show.

00:01:39.799 --> 00:01:47.479
And and we found that you know this is a topic that's really not discussed too often and and you have a wealth of information experience.

00:01:47.260 --> 00:01:52.860
And not only on shows and judging, but you know, the preparing of the honey, but also you keep bees.

00:01:52.860 --> 00:02:00.380
And I think you there you have information that could help in that vein for the shows or for honey itself.

00:02:00.120 --> 00:02:00.920
I do.

00:02:00.920 --> 00:02:04.040
So I started keeping these about 10 years ago.

00:02:04.040 --> 00:02:09.480
And then I entered my first honey show in 2019 at the Wisconsin State Fair.

00:02:09.160 --> 00:02:15.080
I had no idea what I was doing, but with a little bit of dumb luck, I got a second place there.

00:02:15.080 --> 00:02:17.560
But I got feedback from the judge.

00:02:17.200 --> 00:02:26.400
And then I was able to improve an entry and a couple months later go and exhibit at my very first American Beekeeping Federation, American Honey Show.

00:02:26.060 --> 00:02:27.819
And I got a second place there.

00:02:27.819 --> 00:02:31.659
Again, major dumb luck, but then I was hooked, right?

00:02:31.659 --> 00:02:36.140
And so then I was just constantly looking for ways to improve or how to

00:02:36.440 --> 00:02:39.640
properly exhibit and how to make it look like I knew what I was doing.

00:02:39.640 --> 00:02:47.319
And so I've I've uh I've I've picked the brains of some of my fellow competitors, I've taken some training, I've

00:02:47.599 --> 00:02:55.760
gone to conferences just to check out their honey show sometimes, just so that I can improve as a competitor.

00:02:55.640 --> 00:03:00.599
And you're not just a beekeeper, not just a competitor, but you are a judge.

00:03:00.599 --> 00:03:03.400
Which sounds scary, but it's really not, is it Stephanie?

00:03:03.400 --> 00:03:04.360
It's not scary at all.

00:03:04.360 --> 00:03:05.319
It's a ton of fun.

00:03:05.319 --> 00:03:07.959
And it's a whole new group of friends that I've met

00:03:08.020 --> 00:03:18.260
And so uh I can't remember a few years ago, I attended a conference that had an introductory judge training through the American Honey Show Training Council.

00:03:17.760 --> 00:03:25.280
And of course at that time my focus was, ooh, I bet I could learn some tricks on how to be a better competitor if I'm learning about being a judge.

00:03:25.280 --> 00:03:27.840
Well, by the end of the eight hour day

00:03:27.740 --> 00:03:34.460
I d I learned that there were no certified honey judges through the council in my state of Wisconsin.

00:03:34.460 --> 00:03:37.340
And if I were to finish, I would be the first.

00:03:37.340 --> 00:03:39.260
So challenge accepted

00:03:39.260 --> 00:03:48.060
And so in 2023, I did become the first certified honey judge through the American Honey Show Training Council in the state of Wisconsin.

00:03:47.840 --> 00:03:50.160
The American Honey Show Council.

00:03:52.400 --> 00:03:54.480
American Honey Show Training Council.

00:03:54.480 --> 00:03:55.520
Training Council

00:03:55.460 --> 00:03:56.500
I missed the training part.

00:03:56.740 --> 00:03:58.100
It's a mouthful, yes.

00:03:58.740 --> 00:04:02.260
Is is there is that associated with any international organization?

00:04:02.260 --> 00:04:03.780
So are you cross-certified?

00:04:03.780 --> 00:04:08.260
Could you go and judge in the UK say because they have the big national honey show

00:04:08.140 --> 00:04:15.819
So when the American Honey Show Training Council started, its roots come from the Welsh program that comes from Ireland

00:04:15.760 --> 00:04:24.000
And although I don't probably have any reciprocity, it might open a door for me to be able to go and maybe help with a honey show.

00:04:23.860 --> 00:04:30.100
somewhere else as a steward and maybe prove what I'm capable of and perhaps judge in the future.

00:04:30.100 --> 00:04:38.580
So it's it's not a reciprocity agreement per se, but I think it um might open some opportunities for me if if they came about.

00:04:38.800 --> 00:04:46.960
Stephanie, what I remember most about our conversations about honey competitions and and the honey shows is is one that

00:04:47.740 --> 00:04:53.260
It's it's really, I know you say it's easy, but there's there's a lot of preparation that goes into it.

00:04:53.260 --> 00:04:56.060
You don't say that it's easy, but you say that everybody can do it.

00:04:56.060 --> 00:04:58.300
I think that's that may be your message.

00:04:58.300 --> 00:04:58.620
But

00:04:59.300 --> 00:05:10.020
You're you've shared some amazing hints and suggestions in in just really the short period of time that we've talked to you over a few different episodes.

00:05:10.020 --> 00:05:10.660
And so

00:05:11.680 --> 00:05:14.080
Are you like what's your plan?

00:05:14.080 --> 00:05:18.000
Are you just going to share all of the secrets in in this series?

00:05:18.000 --> 00:05:22.880
Are you are you like really going to just put it all out there so everybody can do it?

00:05:22.880 --> 00:05:23.200
And

00:05:23.820 --> 00:05:28.780
it it we're gonna have like honey shows that are overwhelmingly filled with submissions.

00:05:28.780 --> 00:05:29.900
Is that the plan?

00:05:29.900 --> 00:05:33.980
I love that goal to have honey shows overwhelmed with submissions.

00:05:33.980 --> 00:05:35.180
So you're right.

00:05:35.180 --> 00:05:38.460
I do believe that everyone can do it.

00:05:38.320 --> 00:05:46.080
And if you want to do it, we as a whole, like all the honey show exhibitors, can help you achieve that.

00:05:46.080 --> 00:05:51.360
There is a lot of work and there is a lot of attention to detail, but so is beekeeping.

00:05:51.360 --> 00:05:52.480
So if that

00:05:52.940 --> 00:05:57.580
is something that motivates you, the competition, and believe me, it's more camaraderie.

00:05:57.740 --> 00:05:59.900
We're we're not cutthroat competitors.

00:05:59.900 --> 00:06:00.860
We talk to each other.

00:06:00.860 --> 00:06:01.660
We're friends.

00:06:01.660 --> 00:06:03.340
We congratulate each other when

00:06:03.560 --> 00:06:13.000
when we do well, um then I would like to share some of that information with everyone so that if it's a if it's a goal of theirs to compete

00:06:13.039 --> 00:06:21.360
that they can walk in the door feeling confident about what they've brought and they can feel good about the results that they received at the show.

00:06:21.480 --> 00:06:33.560
I was wondering for for not only the competition for the uh the contestants, but will you be able to offer help for the clubs and the organizations?

00:06:33.280 --> 00:06:45.680
who are wanting to put on a better honey show, put on one that's exceptional, as opposed to a you know, your regular conference table with a white cloth on it and a bunch of jars scattered around on it.

00:06:45.680 --> 00:06:48.000
Is there a better way to present honey?

00:06:48.020 --> 00:06:49.940
I think that's a great suggestion, Jeff.

00:06:49.940 --> 00:06:58.660
And I've already added that to my to-do list and make sure that that is a future short topic on how to put on a good honey show.

00:06:58.660 --> 00:07:00.580
Thank you for the suggestion.

00:07:00.160 --> 00:07:09.680
Stephanie, I okay, I've I've never seen a happier beekeeper it from hobbyist to commercial beekeeper to than a beekeeper who's just received

00:07:09.740 --> 00:07:15.420
a blue ribbon or one of those other fancy ribbons that are awarded at the shows.

00:07:15.420 --> 00:07:19.980
So it it's a really fun, happy group of people.

00:07:20.340 --> 00:07:32.100
Are are there ways for people who are entering in honey shows, are there are there opportunities for them to connect and to talk other than actually at those honey shows?

00:07:32.100 --> 00:07:33.300
Is there any like online

00:07:34.020 --> 00:07:44.180
Facebook group or or any kind of of way for these beekeepers to ask questions, talk to each other, um, uh anything like that.

00:07:43.800 --> 00:07:47.720
The American Honey Show Training Council does have a Facebook group.

00:07:47.720 --> 00:07:50.759
It's called the Honey Show Discussion Group.

00:07:50.759 --> 00:07:53.479
And lots of people have joined that.

00:07:53.320 --> 00:07:58.200
And some of us might put out questions about, hey, how do you prepare this entry?

00:07:58.200 --> 00:07:59.640
I've never done it before.

00:07:59.640 --> 00:08:03.640
Or, hey, does anybody have the results from XYZ show?

00:08:03.640 --> 00:08:07.720
And so it really can cover a variety of discussion topics.

00:08:07.380 --> 00:08:09.780
based on who's in that particular group.

00:08:09.780 --> 00:08:14.580
So I encourage anyone to go ahead and join and interact more with your fellow competitors.

00:08:14.580 --> 00:08:17.139
Lots of us honey judges are on there too

00:08:17.139 --> 00:08:21.300
Do you have to show proof of a previous w ribbon in order to get into that group?

00:08:21.540 --> 00:08:23.060
No, it's pretty easy to get in that group.

00:08:23.060 --> 00:08:24.180
I'm pretty sure if you ask me to go to the group.

00:08:25.540 --> 00:08:28.100
You may, Becky, you may, yes.

00:08:28.800 --> 00:08:31.680
And and and then I have another question.

00:08:31.680 --> 00:08:35.840
What if a listener has a specific question for you?

00:08:35.840 --> 00:08:38.719
Is that something you'd be able to entertain in this series?

00:08:38.500 --> 00:08:40.580
I think that would be so much fun.

00:08:40.580 --> 00:08:42.580
And I would love to hear from listeners.

00:08:42.580 --> 00:08:44.500
I would love to receive questions.

00:08:44.500 --> 00:08:52.820
And there might be some opportunities for people to send in photographs of their great entries or their awards so that we can celebrate that.

00:08:52.560 --> 00:09:02.480
Yeah, we can set up a page on the Beekeeping Today website and and and make it the Honey Show page or the we'll we'll s Stephanie's Stephanie's page or something.

00:09:02.480 --> 00:09:06.240
We'll do something and and and you can re you can send people there for the

00:09:06.259 --> 00:09:07.220
their photos.

00:09:07.220 --> 00:09:08.579
That would be so great.

00:09:08.579 --> 00:09:10.819
Stephanie, this is going to be a lot of fun.

00:09:10.819 --> 00:09:14.180
I look forward to hearing each episode.

00:09:14.180 --> 00:09:19.139
So how often and when will we be able to hear your episodes

00:09:19.240 --> 00:09:24.680
We will be doing a short once a month and you'll be able to hear it on the first Wednesday of each month.

00:09:24.680 --> 00:09:27.560
Well, so the first one will come out April 1st.

00:09:27.560 --> 00:09:31.000
It will, April Fool's Day, how appropriate.

00:09:35.600 --> 00:09:37.839
This isn't an April Fool's joke.

00:09:37.839 --> 00:09:39.279
This is for real.

00:09:39.279 --> 00:09:40.720
This is for reals.

00:09:40.720 --> 00:09:42.399
No, that's fantastic, Stephanie.

00:09:42.399 --> 00:09:45.199
I look forward to hearing it and I know our listeners.

00:09:45.160 --> 00:09:48.040
uh will join you on a monthly basis.

00:09:48.040 --> 00:09:49.880
Do you have a name for your show yet?

00:09:49.960 --> 00:09:56.680
So I am brainstorming a few names and I promise by the first episode you will be able to the first

00:09:57.120 --> 00:10:00.480
Or second episode, you'll you'll know what the name is.

00:10:00.959 --> 00:10:01.839
Well, you know what?

00:10:01.839 --> 00:10:04.000
We could we can open it up to listeners too.

00:10:04.000 --> 00:10:08.640
If they have a great a great name for your your show, we can open it up to them.

00:10:08.240 --> 00:10:09.760
to to send it to you.

00:10:09.760 --> 00:10:11.440
And how can they get a hold of you?

00:10:11.440 --> 00:10:14.640
So uh my website is award winninghoney.

00:10:14.640 --> 00:10:15.200
com.

00:10:15.200 --> 00:10:15.840
Excellent.

00:10:15.840 --> 00:10:17.440
I do have a Facebook page too.

00:10:17.440 --> 00:10:19.600
It's Jam Session Honey and Preserves.

00:10:19.600 --> 00:10:20.320
Thank you, Stephanie.

00:10:20.320 --> 00:10:22.480
We'll be listening for you on April 1st.

00:10:22.480 --> 00:10:22.960
Thank you so much.

00:10:23.240 --> 00:10:25.080
Much for having me, I can't wait
