Photo Needs for “Beekeeping Today: Your First Year of Beekeeping”

We’re looking for photos from beekeepers that capture the beauty, diversity, and real-world experience of keeping bees. Your images may appear in our forthcoming book, Beekeeping Today: Your First Year of Beekeeping, and we’d love to feature your work!

  • Hiving of packages and nucs by yourself, with friends, and/or family members.

  • Our needs will change and we will add to the list as we work with the publisher. 

Technical Requirements

To ensure your photos meet the quality needed for print publication, please follow these guidelines:

  • File Format: JPEG (.jpg), TIFF (.tif), or PNG (.png)
  • Resolution: Minimum 300 DPI (dots per inch) at full size
  • Minimum Dimensions: 3000 x 2000 pixels (roughly 10” x 6.5” at 300 DPI)
  • Color Mode: RGB (preferred) or CMYK (acceptable)
  • File Size: Ideally between 2–10 MB per image
  • Orientation: Horizontal (landscape) preferred for layout flexibility
  • File Name Format:jpg (e.g., smith_ohio_smoker.jpg)
  • Editing: Light cropping and exposure adjustments only — please avoid filters, text, or watermarks

Photo Tips

  • Natural light produces the best results — avoid harsh flash when possible.
  • Focus on clear, well-composed images that tell a story.
  • Include scale or context when appropriate (e.g., beekeeper beside hive or close-up of comb).

How to Submit

You have a couple options to get to our dedicated Dropbox for photo submissions. Other contributors won’t be able to see your uploads.

BTP - The Book Photo Submissions

When uploading, please include:

  • Your name (for photo credit)
  • Location (city/state or region)
  • A short caption or description for each photo

 

You don’t need a Dropbox account to upload, and other contributors will not be able to view your files.

Please submit up to 10 photos that best represent your beekeeping experience.

 

Photo Review and Selection

We’re grateful for every photo submitted and appreciate your willingness to share your beekeeping story with us. Please note that submission does not guarantee inclusion in the final publication. All photos will be reviewed by the Beekeeping Today editorial team, and final selections will be made in collaboration with the publisher as the book moves into production.

If your photo is selected for publication, we’ll contact you directly to provide formal permission paperwork and confirm credit details before any image is used.

All photos not selected for use in the book will be securely deleted after the review process.
