I've spent my professional career designing and building sensors for space and other difficult environments. Beekeeping wasn't my idea. An engineering colleague spent years trying to talk me into it, and I finally folded — he gave me my first hive.

Within weeks I was less interested in the honey than in what was going on inside the box. Bees turn out to be remarkable environmental engineers. My hives hold their brood nest at 92.7 °F, within about a degree, while the outside air swings from 41 to 97 °F — no thermostat, no one in charge. That's a control system, and control systems can be measured.

So I started measuring. After about a year of designing and testing sensor configurations, I settled on a 30-metric baseline: not just temperature and humidity, but the hive's acoustic spectrum, its vibration signature, and a chemical fingerprint of the air inside.

The hard part turned out not to be collecting the data. It was turning it back into something a beekeeper can act on — which is most of what I work on now.
