Using CO2 to Fight Varroa Mites with Aakash Manaswi (398)
What if carbon dioxide could offer beekeepers another way to control Varroa mites? In this episode, Jeff Ott and Becky Masterman talk with award-winning high school researcher Aakash Manaswi, whose multi-year research project investigates using carbon dioxide (CO₂) as a treatment against Varroa mites. Aakash traces his interest in honey bees back to a childhood visit to an apiary, where a beekeeper explained how Varroa was affecting his colonies. That encounter eventually led Aakash to ask whether there might be another way to tackle the parasite.
Aakash explains the development of his CO₂ treatment prototype—a hive-top device that distributes carbon dioxide throughout a colony. His research progressed from laboratory testing of different CO₂ concentrations to prototype development and field trials comparing the approach with existing treatments. He discusses the 30% CO₂ concentration used in his research, treatment timing, effects on phoretic mites, and some of the important limitations that still need to be investigated.
The conversation also explores Aakash’s AI-based system for counting Varroa mites on sticky boards, his work with mentors at 3M, USDA, and the University of Florida, and where he hopes to take the research next.
Aakash’s work earned first place in Animal Sciences at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair and the Peggy Scripps Award for Science Communication.

Yeah, so I'm a tenth grader from Orlando, Florida, and kind of my whole story about bees really takes me back around seven years ago.

And I found out that these beekeepers only have a few effective ways to treat for these mites, but some of the issues with these mite with these treatments for the mites

High School Bee Researcher
Aakash Manaswi is a 10th-grade researcher, inventor, and speaker from Orlando, Florida. At 12, he started looking for a chemical-free alternative to Varroa mite treatment in honeybee colonies after learning that the most common pesticide treatments leave chemical residues in honey and beeswax.
He designed and built the "Mite Blower," a CO2-based treatment system that eliminates Varroa mites without introducing chemical residues into hive products, conducting the research under the mentorship of USDA researcher Dr. Charles Stuhl and 3M scientist Rodrigo Marmol. In a 10-week field trial across 60 hives, the system matched conventional pesticides in mite elimination and outperformed them in measures of bee health and honey production.
That work earned him the First Place Grand Award in Animal Sciences and the Peggy Scripps Top Award for Science Communication at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) 2026, a Second Place Grand Award in Animal Sciences at ISEF 2025, and a spot among America's top 10 young scientists through the 3M Young Scientist Challenge. He is published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Apicultural Research, presented his findings on pollinator health at COP30 in Brazil, and is working with Florida state legislators on pesticide policy.
